The specific name name is the Latin translation "of the lake of the Ammer region", "ambriae" being the genitive of the latinized Celtic word for Ammer region, i. e. ambro, and "lacus" being the genitive of lacus, the Latin word for lake. Lake Ammersee is known historically as "Ambriae Lacus" (Graesse 1909). A noun in apposition.
